…is considered the end of the Viking age by historians. That was the year when William, the Duke of Normandy, conquered England. But who were the Vikings? The Vikings comprised different tribes from the present-day countries of Sweden, Norway and Denmark, who attacked and partly conquered many territories ranging from France to Russia. Around the year of 1000, Leif Eriksson, an Icelandic discoverer, was the first European to set his foot on American territory. Traces of his expedition can be still found in L`Anse aux Meadows in Canada. Contrary to the image of being violent murdering tribes, there are also historical sources who describe the Vikings as successful tradesmen and sailors.
